Boston Golf Course – Creating a Signature Pond Before the 10th Green

ABBCO was commissioned by Boston Golf Course to transform the 10th hole approach — turning a simple par 4 into one of the course’s most memorable features.

The redesign centred on building a 420 m² signature pond, re-shaping the existing bunker, and recontouring the rough using all excavated material. The result: a hole that’s strategic, visually stunning, and environmentally efficient — a showcase of ABBCO’s golf course design and construction expertise.

The Challenge

The original 10th was well kept but lacked identity. Its generous fairway and raised green offered little challenge beyond distance control.
The sole hazard — a front bunker measuring 35 m × 20 m — was easy to avoid and didn’t meaningfully influence play.

Boston Golf Course wanted to inject more strategy, drama, and visual appeal while keeping the hole natural and in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

ABBCO’s Solution

ABBCO managed the full delivery — from design refinement and excavation to liner installation, bunker rebuild, contouring, and finishing — all handled in-house.

The new design introduced a natural-style pond stretching across the approach, seamlessly integrated with the course’s landscape and drainage system.

Key Project Elements

Pond Construction:
A 420 m² feature pond lined with SealEco EPDM supplied by Gordon Low Products, ensuring long-term flexibility, watertight performance, and sustainability.

Bunker Redesign:
Reduced in size to 35 m × 12 m and repositioned tight to the pond edge, visually framing the green and adding strategic tension.

Material Reuse:
100% of the excavated soil was reused to reshape the approach and rough — a zero-waste earthworks solutionthat improved definition and drainage.

Rough Reprofiling:
The recontoured rough now blends naturally into the pond margins, enhancing both playability and visual flow.

Ecological Detailing:
Marginal and native reed planting encourages biodiversity, supporting wildlife while creating a mature, natural finish.

How It Plays

The redesigned hole now demands strategy, accuracy, and nerve.

From the tee, players must choose their line carefully — the left side opens up the green, while the right brings overhanging trees and water into play.

The approach is a true risk-reward shot:
140–155 yards over the pond to a narrow green guarded by the front bunker.
A heavy shot finds sand; a thin one finds water. There’s no bail-out.

The new contours create natural ball movement, rewarding precision and punishing poor placement. The hole now looks and plays like a proper signature par 4.

Construction & Sustainability

Delivered by ABBCO:
All excavation, liner installation, bunker rebuild, and finishing completed by our in-house team.

SealEco EPDM Liner:
Installed by ABBCO and supplied by Gordon Low Products — providing a durable, eco-friendly, and flexible lining system.

Sustainable Earthworks:
Excavated material reused entirely on site — no waste, minimal haulage, reduced carbon footprint.

Drainage Integration:
The pond now connects directly to the club’s irrigation network, boosting water management efficiency and drought resilience.

Ecological Enhancement:
The feature has already attracted wildlife — ducks, frogs, dragonflies — enriching the ecosystem and enhancing the natural beauty of the hole.

The Result

The redesigned 10th hole has become one of Boston Golf Course’s signature features — combining play strategy, sustainability, and aesthetics in one striking visual.

ABBCO delivered:

A 420 m² pond lined with SealEco EPDM, built for longevity and performance.

A reshaped 35 m × 12 m bunker that visually defines the approach.

Reprofiled rough and approach contours that flow seamlessly into the new design.

An upgrade that enhances play, improves drainage, and increases biodiversity.
