Pond Clearance in Dereham: Restoring an Overgrown Garden Pond
A mature pond can be one of the best features in a garden, but without regular maintenance, aquatic plants can quickly start to take over.
We were recently contacted by a homeowner in Dereham, Norfolk, whose large garden pond had become completely overwhelmed by water lilies and other vegetation.
After years of trying to manage the pond themselves, the growth had reached the point where much of the open water had disappeared and the pond needed a more substantial clearance.
The Problem: Water Lilies Had Taken Over the Pond
Water lilies can be a brilliant addition to a pond. They provide cover, shade and habitat for wildlife, but they can also spread incredibly quickly when left unchecked.
In this case, the lily growth had become so dense that large areas of the pond surface were completely covered.
The surrounding marginal plants had also become overgrown, making the pond feel much smaller than it actually was.
The aim wasn't to strip the pond bare. The client wanted to keep the mature, established character of the pond while bringing the vegetation back under control.
A Two-Day Pond Clearance
We spent two days carrying out a full pond clearance.
The work included:
Removing large quantities of excess water lily growth
Thinning the remaining lilies rather than removing them completely
Clearing excessive aquatic vegetation
Tidying and reducing overgrown marginal plants
Opening up areas of clear water again
Restoring the overall balance of the pond
With an established pond like this, careful clearance is important.
Removing absolutely everything can completely change the character of the pond and disturb the habitat that has developed over the years. Instead, we selectively reduced the vegetation so the pond could continue to look natural while being much easier to manage.

Before:
The water lily growth had spread across much of the pond, leaving very little visible open water.
After:
The pond was opened back up, revealing its original size and shape while retaining plenty of established planting around the margins.
The difference was immediate.
Rather than looking overgrown and neglected, the pond once again became a feature of the garden.

One of the biggest benefits of clearing an overgrown pond properly is that it becomes much easier to manage going forward.
Following the work, the owners decided to move onto an annual pond maintenance plan with ABBCO.
Regular maintenance allows us to thin aggressive plants, manage lilies and remove excessive growth before it gets to the stage where another major clearance is needed.
