Pond Investigation in Tasburgh – Identifying the Cause of Major Water Loss
We were recently called out to investigate a pond in Tasburgh, Norfolk that was losing a significant amount of water every single day. With no obvious signs of overflow or surface damage, a full investigation was required to identify the root cause.
Step One: Draining the Pond
Due to the volume of water loss, the only reliable way to assess the issue was to drain the pond completely. Before any work began, all fish were carefully removed and transferred into our dedicated koi vat, ensuring they were kept safe, oxygenated, and stress-free throughout the process.
Step Two: Cleaning and Inspection
Once drained, the pond was thoroughly cleaned to expose the liner and structure beneath. This allowed us to carry out a proper inspection rather than guessing at the problem.
During this stage, we discovered that the pond was fitted with a uPVC liner that was over 30 years old. Over time, liners of this age naturally degrade — becoming brittle, thinning in places, and developing weak points that can lead to leaks.
Step Three: Temporary Repair
To stabilise the situation, we carried out a temporary repair to the liner. This was enough to reduce water loss in the short term, but due to the liner’s age and overall condition, it is not a long-term solution.
The Long-Term Fix
The client has now decided to proceed with a full pond reline, which is the correct and permanent fix. A new liner will not only stop the water loss but also extend the life of the pond for decades to come.

The full reline will be scheduled shortly, and we’ll be documenting the process from start to finish — so stay tuned for the next update.
If you’re experiencing unexplained water loss from your pond, this project is a good example of why a full inspection is sometimes the only way to get real answers.
