Pond Relining Project in Tasburgh, Norwich: From Constant Leaks to a Floating Bridge Feature
At ABBCO, we were recently called out to a residential pond that had been losing water for years — and the solution completely transformed both its performance and appearance.
The Problem: A Pond That Wouldn’t Hold Water
This pond in Tasburgh, near Norwich, had one major issue: it simply wouldn’t retain water.
The leak had been ongoing for years, to the point where a hosepipe had become a permanent fixture just to maintain the water level. Aside from being inefficient and costly, it also prevented the pond from ever looking its best.
Investigation & Findings
After carrying out a full pond clean and inspection, we quickly identified the root cause.
The existing HDPE liner had:
Cracked in multiple areas
Split along stress points
Begun breaking down due to prolonged UV exposure
At this stage, repair wasn’t a reliable option — a full pond reline was the only long-term solution.
The Solution: Installing a New EPDM Pond Liner
We removed the damaged liner and installed a high-quality EPDM rubber liner, known for its durability, flexibility, and resistance to UV damage.
This type of liner is ideal for long-term pond performance, especially in outdoor environments like those found across Norwich and Norfolk.
The Unexpected Opportunity: Fixing the Water Level Issue
During the inspection, we noticed something else that most would overlook.
The pond’s bridge was sitting approximately 300mm lower than the surrounding crazy paving, which meant:
The water level had been artificially kept low
Around 300mm of liner was visible, affecting the overall look
As water level specialists, we saw an opportunity to completely change the visual impact of the pond.
What We Did Differently
Instead of rebuilding or altering the structure, we:
Increased the pond’s water level by 300mm
Used the existing concrete lip
Carefully adjusted the liner installation to suit the new level
The Result: A “Floating” Bridge Effect
The transformation was immediate.
By raising the water level, the bridge now appears to float on the surface of the pond, creating a far more premium and visually striking feature — all without major structural changes.
And most importantly:
👉 The pond now holds water perfectly, with no need for constant refilling.
