Premium Koi Pond Build in Cromer, Norfolk: A Full Transformation

This wasn’t a repair or upgrade. This was a dream pond build for a passionate koi enthusiast who wanted a system that would never need upgrading.

The Brief: Build It Once. Build It Right.

Our client, Neil, came to us with a clear vision:

  • A visual centrepiece for the garden

  • A high-performance koi system

  • A setup that wouldn’t need revisiting or upgrading in the future

In short — no compromises. Just our client, Neil’s, dream pond.

Starting From Scratch

The existing pond was removed entirely. It had reached the end of its life and wasn’t worth salvaging.

From day one, everything was built with precision:

  • Datum levels set

  • Water level locked in

  • Filtration heights calculated

  • Full layout mapped before excavation began

This stage is where most problems are either created or avoided — and we make sure it’s the latter.

Groundworks & Structure

This wasn’t a basic dig-and-line job.

We built a fully reinforced structure designed for long-term stability and performance:

  • 350mm crush base

  • 100mm Type 1 MOT

  • 200mm C30 S3+ concrete base

  • Reinforced with A142 mesh

  • Over 500 blocks laid flat for maximum strength

This level of groundwork ensures the pond won’t shift, crack, or cause issues down the line — something you don’t get with standard builds.

Filtration & System Design

This is where the project separates itself.

We designed and installed a high-performance gravity-fed system, built specifically for koi health, water clarity, and ease of maintenance.

Key Features:

  • 2 x 4” pressure bottom drains with swept bends

  • 4” gravity skimmer

  • Filtreau Excellent Combi Drum 30/40 Low

  • 80w amalgam UV

  • 120lph Medo air system

Circulation & Flow:

  • 2 x 22000 Varios pumps

  • Bakki shower return system

  • Pressure return via flange

Heating:

  • 14kW professional heater

Everything is designed to:

  • Maximise flow

  • Eliminate dead spots

  • Maintain high oxygen levels

  • Future-proof the entire system

No shortcuts. No compromises.

Dedicated Filter House (Built to Match the Garden)

Rather than hiding equipment away, we built a fully integrated filter house.

Designed with a rustic barn conversion look, it features:

  • Black feather edge cladding

  • Wienerberger farmhouse brick base

It blends seamlessly into the garden while housing a system that’s built for serious performance.

The Transformation

Over the course of 8 weeks, this site went from a stripped-out space to a fully finished, high-end koi pond installation.

Once the box-welded liner was installed and the pond began filling, everything came together quickly:

  • Clean, balanced water levels

  • Smooth circulation

  • Fully operational filtration system

And then — the real moment:

👉 The koi returning to the water.

Calm, controlled, and thriving in a system built specifically for them.

The Result: A Pond That Won’t Need Upgrading

This isn’t just a pond that looks good on day one.

It’s a long-term investment, built to:

  • Maintain water quality

  • Support koi health

  • Require minimal ongoing intervention

  • Deliver a standout visual feature

Exactly what was asked for — and delivered.

What’s Next?

This isn’t the end of the project, just a start to a great working relationship.

We’ll be returning to:

  • Install a new patio area

  • Develop additional growing-on systems for koi

This is a long-term setup — and we’re continuing to build on it.
